Here in the years of the Nazi occupation of the city there was a camp of prisoners of war, in which the Hitlerites tortured more than 100,000 people. The organizers of the event were the regional branch of the Belarusian Foundation for Peace. The rally was timed to coincide with the events of April 11, 1945, when an international uprising against the Nazis broke out in the death camp of Buchenwald, after which a wave of liberation of prisoners of concentration camps began. As a tribute to the victims of Nazism, former prisoners of fascist concentration camps, government officials, members of the Gomel City Veterans Council, youth and peace fund activists have planted flowers and honored the victims with a minute of silence. The participants of the meeting were Deputy Head of the Administration of the Central District of Gomel, Chairman of the Regional Organization of the Peace Foundation Olga Dotsenko and Deputy Chairman of the Regional Department of the Peace Foundation Vladimir Vosarev. Young peacemakers of the secondary school No. 27 in Gomel, the Peace School on behalf of the Peace Foundation and all the Gomel residents, laid a wreath and flowers on the memorial. Former prisoners, those who managed to survive, and for whom it is not just history, but part of their own lives, told the audience about their hard life. To date, about 450 former inmates live in Gomel and all of them need care, support and attention. And the “Belarusian Peace Foundation” sets its priority to help each of them!
