On the outskirts of the city of Polotsk, near the Spaso-Efrosinyevsky monastery and the military unit is a mass grave of the great Patriotic war – the Tract Sands. During the great Patriotic war there was a German transit camp for Soviet prisoners of war «Dulag-125».
In the camp on the outskirts of Polotsk sent Soviet soldiers who fought in the Moscow direction. Belarusians, Ukrainians and Russians were waiting for their fate here.
Hard work, almost complete lack of food and disease left almost no chance of survival. The death rate in the camp reached two hundred people a day. All were buried at the former shooting range. The process was like a conveyor, when the trench on one side only still digging, and with another — they already dropped off the bodies and pricipales the ground.
Starting in 1942, the Germans began to open the graves, get the remains and burn. The state Commission, which worked here in March 1945, found burned fragments of human remains in half of the holes opened. Whether it was an attempt to hide the traces of a crime or just not enough space for new corpses, probably no one will ever know.
Camp «Dulag-125» is not the only place where the sand brought the corpses. This also took shot and hanged from a civilian camp «Thunders,» here are buried the prisoners of the County jail and the Gestapo.
There is an «Act of may 7, 1945 to establish and investigate the facts of atrocities and atrocities committed by the Nazi invaders and their accomplices during the temporary occupation of Polotsk from July 15, 1941 to July 4, 1944», compiled by a special investigative Commission on the basis of protocols of questioning former prisoners, witnesses, acts of excavation of mass graves of Soviet prisoners of war in the Tract Sands. During the existence of the camp in Polotsk it was destroyed more than 40 thousand prisoners of war.
The remains are covered with sand. which is easily washed away by the rains. The place is called-the Tract of Sand. Now the wasteland is overgrown with grass, but there is still no rest for the victims. White slivers of human bones are everywhere. Local the young boys played here in football, running directly on the bones of their ancestors. Search engines dug pits to determine the size of the burial. Human bones were found at a depth of two meters. Only one grave was 260 by 100 meters.
The descendants must remember that truly the war will end only when will be buried the last of its soldiers. Human memory is short, so it will never be superfluous to recall the names of those who selflessly and courageously defended the freedom and dignity of their people. In may 2010, the Polotsk district organization NGO » Belarusian peace Fund «appealed to the Polotsk city Executive Committee and the city Council of deputies with an initiative to build a Memorial complex in memory of the victims of fascism»the Tract Sands». The initiative was heard and supported at the session of the Polotsk city Council of deputies. His decision №12 from 25.06.2010 g. Polotsk city Executive Committee was instructed to create a working group on the construction of the memorial. Financing of these works was carried out at the expense of budgetary funds, gratuitous sponsorship and voluntary donations of legal entities, individual entrepreneurs, individuals credited to the target account of the Vitebsk regional branch of the public Association «Belarusian peace Fund». Currently, work on the construction of the memorial continues, but very slowly due to lack of funds.
